NIST Requests Public Comments on Revised Guidelines for Smart Grid Cybersecurity(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) NEW YORK, Nov. 12 -- The American National Standards Institute issued the following news release: The National Institute of Standards and Technology (http://www.nist.gov/) (NIST), a division of the U.S. Department of Commerce (http://www.commerce.gov/), is currently seeking public comments on a draft update to its official guidelines covering cybersecurity and secure implementation of Smart Grid technology in the United States. An official notice announcing the call for comments was recently published in the U.S. Federal Register. The revision is the first for the guidelines, which were originally published in September 2010; the new version was developed in response to significant growth in the use of Smart Grid technology and concurrent changes in relevant laws and regulation in the ensuing years. The guidelines are primarily intended to be use by cybersecurity professionals, but may be of use to researchers, technology vendors, representatives of public utilities, and others. The draft guidelines, known as NIST Interagency Report (IR) 7628 Revision 1: Guidelines for Smart Grid Cybersecurity (http://csrc.nist.gov/publications/PubsDrafts.html#NIST-IR-7628r1), retain the original document's three-volume structure, with volume 1 providing technical information on electrical grid security maintenance, volume 2 looking at related privacy issues, and volume 3 including references and analysis that undergird the guidelines as a whole. The revision adds a new section focused on privacy-related issues to volume 2, among other, smaller changes. All comments on the proposed changes must be received by Tuesday, December 24, 2013; interested parties can access comment spreadsheet templates on NIST's webpage (http://csrc.nist.gov/publications/PubsDrafts.html#NIST-IR-7628r1) and may submit the completed document containing their comments via email to [email protected].
