Ambient smart grid nodes implement IEC 61850 for distribution and substation automation

Oct 17, 2013 (TELECOMWORLDWIRE via COMTEX) -- Ambient Corp. (NASDAQ: AMBT) said that all Ambient smart grid nodes have native support for International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61850, a global protocol for substations and electric power systems.

IEC 61850 support allows the Ambient smart grid nodes to collect, store, and communicate data from Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) and filter the amount of data backhauled. The flexible, node-based communications architecture, helps streamline grid operations, ensures optimal performance and effectively addresses overall system availability and security to meet the challenging requirements of substation and distribution automation.

Ambient helps utilities modernize the grid with IP-based networking products and applications that integrate and connect existing and future grid assets on a secure, flexible, and scalable smart grid communications platform. Ambient's Smart Grid Node family enables real time data communication for multiple applications, in parallel: smart metering, distributed generation and storage, demand response, and distribution automation.

Ambient designs, develops and sells the Ambient smart grid communications and applications platform. More information on Ambient is available at www.ambientcorp.com.
