Telx selects TE Connectivity's fiber solutions for new data center

Sep 23, 2013 (MarketLine via COMTEX) -- TE Connectivity has announced that Telx has selected its high-density fiber solutions for a new data center at 100 Delawanna Avenue, Clifton, New Jersey as part of Telx's fully-owned data center campus.

Telx, a leading provider of global interconnectivity, cloud enablement services and 100% Uptime SLA data center facilities, designed the 215,000 square-foot data center for faster and more robust access to equipment connections.

"In a round-the-clock 'uptime' environment contending with hundreds of thousands of equipment ports, having easy access to fiber cables and connectors is key to make adds, moves and changes," says Jaxon Lang, vice president of TE Telecom Networks. "That's why our portfolio of high-density data center solutions helps alleviate equipment congestion and provides the means to install cable faster and more efficiently. Our products help our customers meet their immediate and long-term revenue objectives." "Telx sought a cross-connect network infrastructure that seamlessly bridged the gap between carriers and customer co-location equipment and for use between individual collocated customers," said Ron Sterbenz, senior vice president of Product & Marketing for Telx. "The solution needed to address large counts of fiber coming in from both outside and within the floors of the facility, while simultaneously balancing the accessibility requirements for technicians managing equipment connections." To manage the data center connections, Telx chose TE's portfolio of high-density fiber products including the NG4access ODF, Rapid Fiber panel, FiberGuide raceway, MPO and microcable solutions.

The NG4access ODF includes an optical distribution frame, universal chassis, LC adapter packs and MPO modules, and handles the carrier connections on each end of the data center line-up. Each chassis features access trays that easily open on the front or back side of the frame, providing technicians unrestricted access to connectors and cable for maintenance and service changes. Additional NG4access ODFs were installed in the middle of the line-up to serve as the cross-connect solution for customer co-location applications.

When considering both current and projected fiber density, the NG4access ODF was a clear choice for Telx. The optical distribution frame holds 3,456 LC fiber terminations and features ample trough space and protection for cables and connectors. With interchangeable adapter packs for LC or SC connectors, cabled modules and MPO modules, the NG4access ODF offered modularity to meet a variety of future connection requirements. To reduce cable congestion, the NG4access ODF was designed for TE's 1.2mm microcable patch cords, which requires half the spaces of traditional 1.6mm patch cords, and offers better handling and performance characteristics than larger diameter cable.

TE's Rapid Fiber panel was chosen to facilitate faster service connections between the active equipment and the NG4access ODF cross-connect line-up. Utilizing TE's unique RapidReel fiber cable spool, the Rapid Fiber panel pays out dual 12-fiber 3 mm microcable to the desired length. Available in 100-foot increments (up to 1000 feet), the multifiber cable terminates to a multifiber push-on connector (MPO), which enables a plug-and-play connection to the MPO module in the NG4access ODF. By adopting an MPO connector architecture, Telx can route and install new equipment faster and more efficiently, while simplifying their overall cable inventory requirements.

TE's FiberGuide raceway system was installed throughout the data center to protect and route the fiber optic patch cords and intrafacility cable (IFC) to and from the NG4access ODF, Rapid Fiber panels, and active equipment racks. This raceway ensures a two-inch minimum of bend radius is maintained throughout the system ensuring uninterrupted, optimal fiber performance. The combination of TE's microcable and MPO connector solutions help minimize cable congestion in the FiberGuide raceway and ladder racking systems, and reduce the need for slack cable storage.
