County Council approves property rezonings

NEWBERRY, Jul 19, 2013 (The Newberry Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Newberry County Council unanimously approved an ordinance Wednesday that will change property on Wicker Road and Highway 773 from rural to single family residential.

Council also unanimously approved an ordinance to change two acres of property also on Wicker Road and Highway 773 from rural to limited commercial.

This will provide the option for the property to be used for residential homes or a small commercial business.

Two Newberry County service awards were presented to Tommy Long and Shane Kitchen for their five and 10 years of service. Long is an Emergency Services Coordinator. Kitchen works for the sheriff's office.

A second reading was approved by council to rezone property at the corner of Parr and Broad River roads from rural to limited commercial.

A resolution to commission a Code Enforcement Officer for Newberry County was also approved by council. The officer will be used to work with animal control, the building department, and have other duties.

Chief Deputy Todd Johnson spoke on behalf of a consideration of a proposal for redundant servers and operating system for the 911 system from AT&T and Encore Technology.

Johnson explained currently only having one server puts the department at a disadvantage because one server could take them out completely.

"The state is willing to reimburse us at 70 percent," Johnson told council.

The proposal was unanimously accepted by council members. The next Newberry County Council meeting will be held Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. The meeting previously scheduled for Aug. 7 was cancelled.
