Botswana's mobile subscriptions pass 3 mln [Global Data Point]


(Global Data Point Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Botswana's mobile phone subscriptions reached over 3 million at the end of 2012, nearly double the number recorded in 2008, Mmegi reported. Statistics from the Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority show that mobile teledensity in 2012 was nearly 153 percent. According to the data, the number of mobile phone subscriptions opened 2012 at 2.92 million, passed the three million mark in October 2012, and ended the year at 3.08 million. The BOCRA data also shows growth in fixed lines provided by the Botswana Telecommunications Corporation, from about 144,000 in 2008 to 160,500 last year. On the uptake of internet services, the authority's figures show that country went from around 6,000 broadband subscribers in 2008 to 18,838 last year.
