Silver Spring Networks Expands Smart City Infrastructure Platform Through New Collaboration with Street Lighting Pioneer SELC

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. & DUBLIN --(Business Wire)--

Today at the Energy Ireland 2013 Conference, Silver Spring Networks (NYSE: SSNI), a leading networking platform and solutions provider for smart energy networks, announced it is expanding its Smart City infrastructure platform through a new collaboration with street lighting control pioneer SELC. Through this collaboration, the parties intend to integrate Silver Spring's IPv6 networking platform with SELC's street light control systems and jointly bring the combined solution to market globally. These enhanced capabilities enable operators to leverage a standards-based network infrastructure to reduce costs over manual street light monitoring, greatly extend the lifespan of existing high-pressure sodium (HPS) street lights, and establish an open networking platform for the future deployment and management of more efficient light-emitting diode (LED) lighting.

"Cities around the world are modernizing their lighting infrastructure to lower operational costs, improve energy efficiency for the future, and increase safety for their citizens," said Sterling Hughes (News - Alert), Senior Director of Advanced Technologies, Silver Spring Networks. "SELC pioneered the street light control marketplace so we are thrilled that they will be joining our open ecosystem as we expand our networking platform into new areas of Smart City infrastructure."

"We're excited to combine the best of Silver Spring and SELC to deliver the world's first IPv6-based street light control system network," said Sean Noone, Founder and President, SELC. "Since our founding in 1982, I've said that street light control systems are one of the most important elements of urban infrastructure and, with this partnership, the industry is taking a major step forward in increasing the lifetime savings and reducing the environmental costs of intelligent infrastructure."

Designed for the global market, the new solution enables infrastructure operators to control street light voltage, automate variable dimming and illumination, and remotely monitor street light performance and outages through the integration of Silver Spring's IPv6-networking platform with SELC's street lighting control technologies, incuding:

  • SELC Control Nodes: provides control, dimming (energy reduction), energy measurement and remote lamp failure detection for LEDs and dimmable electronic ballasts.
  • SELC Photocells: provides control, energy measurement and remote lamp failure detection capabilities.
  • SELC Electronic Ballasts: Silver Spring's networking is designed into SELC's ballasts, providing an integrated solution for controlling and monitoring the lamp.

"Creating a single, standards-based platform that enables both smart grid and smart street lighting controls to share costs is an important step towards helping utilities and councils to reduce costs and CO2 whilst delivering better payback times," said Robert Schrimpff, partner at Greencoat Capital.

Silver Spring provides a high-performance IPv6-based network that establishes a communications foundation for a city's assets regardless of distribution topology. Silver Spring is expanding the functionality of its smart infrastructure platform to support Smart City solutions such as intelligent street lighting, traffic signal control, and electric vehicle charging, among others.
