BRIEF: Man taken to hospital in Dallas after UTA campus shutdown

ARLINGTON, Jun 20, 2013 (Fort Worth Star-Telegram - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The University of Texas at Arlington campus was shut down for several hours Wednesday morning after Dallas police got a 911 call about a UTA student who was depressed and armed, police reported.

The caller did not know where her friend was, so Dallas police notified Arlington and UTA police. School officials issued an alert about 4:30 a.m. telling anyone on campus to stay indoors and anyone headed for the campus to stay away.

About 9 a.m., Dallas police reported, officers found the man at a friend's apartment in the 7600 block of Churchill Way in north Dallas, according to a Dallas police Facebook posting.

"Officers secured the area and SWAT officers were able to establish communications with the suspect," police reported. "After a brief negotiation, the suspect surrendered without incident and was taken to an area hospital for evaluation." The campus reopened at noon.
