Stolen vehicle chased across two counties

Jun 18, 2013 (Corning Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A man led California Highway Patrol on an hour-long car chase through two counties on Tuesday morning.

Alerted to a report that a 2001 Dodge Ram pickup had been stolen from the ACE Hardware store in Cottonwood about 9:15 a.m., a CHP patrol unit in Tehama County spotted a pickup matching the description of the stolen truck on southbound Interstate 5 at Jelly's Ferry Road, north of Red Bluff, the CHP reported.

The officer attempted to stop the truck near Adobe Road, but the driver, later identified as Randen Russell Knight, 22 of Lewiston, Idaho, did not yield, the CHP reported.

Reaching speeds of 90 mph, the truck left the freeway at Diamond Road in Red Bluff, but re-entered a short distance later, where he was able to avoid a spike-strip at Flores Avenue, the CHP reported.

Caltrans and construction workers doing roadwork in that area were warned of the pursuit and moved to a safe location before the pursuit reached their area, CHP said.

The pursuit continued down Interstate 5 through Tehama County, past Corning and into Glenn County. More CHP units as well as Tehama County sheriff's vehicles had joined the chase.

The truck exited the freeway at Road 7, just north of Orland, and traveled westbound for several miles before driving through a fence and into pasture north toward the Glenn and Tehama counties line, the CHP reported.

The truck eventually crashed into a ditch and the driver fled on foot, the CHP reported.

A CHP helicopter landed near the fleeing suspect and were able to catch him and make the arrest in Tehama County, the CHP reported.

Knight was booked into the Tehama County Jail on suspicion of reckless evasion and vehicle theft. No bail amount was available.
