[June 19, 2013] China's telecom business volume grows 7.9 pct in Jan-May Tweet BEIJING, Jun 19, 2013 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- China's telecom industry posted a business volume of 569.57 billion yuan in the first five months this year, up 7.9 percent year on year, 0.1 percentage points slower than that in the first four months, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the industry generated 465.88 billion yuan in business income, up 8.7 percent year on year. The ministry said that China's phone user number grew by 49 million in the five months to 1.44 billion, including 1.165 billion mobile phone users. In the Internet access sector, the number of broadband internet access users grew 9.477 million to 179 million. Of the total, 150 million were home users, growing by 6.999 million and accounting for 83.6 percent. The convergence of the telecom network, Internet and broadcasting network maintained a sound momentum. In the five months, China's IPTV user number grew 3.108 million or 46.4 percent to 24.851 million, the mobile TV user number grew 11.1 percent to 55.907 million, the Internet of Things terminal user number and mobile payment user number respectively reached 26.601 million and 2.777 million. Thanks to the expansion of user scale, the IPTV business income reached 1.58 billion yuan, up 42.9 percent year on year; while the mobile TV business income reached 1.03 billion yuan, up 30 percent year on year. Data business growth contributed around 80 percent to the telecom industry. In the five months, the data and Internet business posted an income of 131.14 billion yuan, rising 29.4 percent year on year and contributing 28.1 percent of the industry's total income. Of the amount, the fixed data and Internet business generated 61.38 billion yuan, up 7.9 percent year on year; while the mobile data and Internet business generated 69.76 billion yuan, up 56.8 percent year on year.
