Third alligator found in BibbJun 19, 2013 (The Macon Telegraph - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Bibb County deputies babysat an alligator early Wednesday along Interstate 75. A passing driver phoned 911 after seeing the gator on the side of the northbound entrance ramp of Hartley Bridge Road at about 2 a.m. This is the third alligator sighting reported in Macon and Bibb County this month. Deputies kept watch as Jason Clark, of Southeastern Reptile Rescue in Spalding County, had to hitch a ride with his neighbor after Clark's truck broke down on the way to Macon. Clark arrived at around 5 a.m. and began tiring the reptile by taunting him with towels and a pole borrowed from a deputy's patrol car. After about 15 minutes, Clark was able to approach from behind, grab the gator's long jaws, hold them shut and tape the mouth closed. Once the gator's legs were constrained, it was loaded into the trunk of the neighbor's Chevrolet Impala. "Don't try this at home," said Clark, who apologized for not having his regular truck. "I don't want people thinking you can just load an alligator into your trunk." Abundant rain during mating season could explain the multiple gator reports. "Alligators are moving right now, this is just the one we saw tonight," he said. Clark will give another local trapper the option of taking the alligator for meat, as is protocol for one caught in this territory. If the local trapper doesn't bite on the offer, Clark will release the gator into the wild. ___ (c)2013 The Macon Telegraph (Macon, Ga.)
