[June 18, 2013] BRIEF: National Grid underground cable project in Salem will avoid Derby Street Tweet SALEM, Jun 18, 2013 (The Salem News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- National Grid announced today that it has changed the preferred route for its underground transmission project and will not be going down Derby Street. Instead, the utility said it will recommend running two cable lines in a single duct down one route: Fort Avenue, Forrester Street, Washington Square South, Congress Street, and Fairfield and Cypress streets. Next year, National Grid plans to replace high-voltage transmission lines from a substation at Salem Harbor Station to one on Canal Street. It had been planning to run single cables down both the Derby and Forrester routes. After an additional review, the company said it chose the single route. The company, which is required to file an alternative route with the state, said it is considering one under Fort Avenue, Webb and Andrew streets, Washington Square North, Hawthorne Boulevard, Charter, Lafayette, Gardner and Canal streets.
