Obije Wins MTN WGC Western Regional Qualifiers


(AllAfrica Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Christopher Obije has once again, emerged the overall winner in the Western Regional qualifiers of the World Golfers Championship, sponsored by telecommunications giant, MTN. The 18-hole championship was played last Saturday at the 10-hole, Ikeja Golf Club where Obije, was also champion.

This victory has earned him the top spot among the 15 players that qualified for the National Finals of the championship, slated for September.

General Manager, Consumer Marketing, MTN, Mr. Kola Oyeyemi, at the gala night to wrap up the championship, restated the commitment of the company to the development of golf. MTN, he said is determined to take golf to the next level as the company will continue to support the tournament.


"At MTN, we are focused on the delivery of exceptional and quality services, if you are not with MTN, this era provide an opportunity to port so as to continue to benefit from the company's array of products and services".

The company, he remarked is a responsible organisation. "If a brand can be responsible for over 50 million Nigerians and still counting, if there's no character, MTN won't be where it is today. I think there is need to identify with such company," he said.

Playing-off Handicap 3, Obije won the 0-5 category after a gross score of 74 and 71 net. He was followed by Milo Ajah and Lanre Tanimowo who finished second and third respectively with gross and net score of 74 and 72 and 83 and 78.

Other winners include, Alaba Adetunji, who won the 6-10 handicap category, with 76 gross score and 66 net. He qualified alongside Bidemi Babatunde and Rasaki Muritala that finished in the second and third place. They both finished with gross scores of 75 each and net scores of 68 respectively.

Fred Uwereka won the 11-15 category with 83 gross score and 70 net while Bonny Obieze finished second, with 82 gross score and 70 net while Tayo Lasore came third with 90 gross and 76 net. The 16 - 20 category was won by Femi Owolaja, with 85 gross and 65 net. He qualified from the category with Wale Ayanbadejo who finished second with 86 gross and 67 net and Dr. Shaga Hawatan who was third with 89 gross and 69 net.

Category 21 - 25 was won by Jarawa Osmond who emerged victorious with 93 gross and 69 net. Ade Olaiya was second with 90 gross and 69 net while Bolaji Martins finished third with 98 gross and 73 net to become the 15th player from the Western region that qualified for the National Finals in Akwa Ibom in September.

The winners were presented with prizes at a presentation ceremony and gala night on Saturday. Other awards on the night were the Nearest to the pin on Hole 15 for men, which was won by, Theodore Halim. The Longest Drive on Hole 18 went to Osinaji Yomi Egbe, in the men's category while Ogunbiyi Sade picked up the women's.

The championship which began as early as 7am on Saturday witnessed the participation of eminent personalities.

The Northern regional qualifiers will hold in Abuja on July 6 ahead of the National finals which is scheduled to hold in September where Nigeria's representative to the world finals, Durban, South Africa will emerge.
