Dozens go Back to the Farm to raise money for Shriners

Jun 16, 2013 (Appeal-Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Dozens gathered on Saturday morning in a walnut orchard outside Meridian to raise money for the Shriner's Hospital in Sacramento.

But Marysville's Brent Corona, 13, was more excited about riding in a 100-year-old car.

Brent and his friends, Robby Boyce and Alex Jones, took a ride around the orchard in a 1913 Model T Ford.

"It was cool when we started going super fast," Brent said later. "My hat almost flew off, and I had to grab it with my hands." Ed Rose's Model T was just one of the attractions at the Ben Ali Shriners Back to the Farm event. Rose sold rides for $5 and, for $30, he would give a half-hour driving lesson.

"They (Model Ts) will go places that a Jeep will think twice about," Rose said.

Guy Harris hosted the event in his walnut orchard for the second year.

"The idea is to have people from Sacramento come up through the country, spend some time out here, and see a car show and get some good barbecue," Harris said.

All proceeds raised on Saturday benefit the Sacramento hospital.

Plumas Lake's Steve Parnow came with this family.

"It's a good way to spend time your family," Parnow said. "And it's all for a good cause." CONTACT Rob Parsons at [email protected] or 749-4785. Find him on Facebook at /ADcrimebeat or on Twitter at @ADcrimebeat.
