Deja vu

May 27, 2013 (The Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Union's O'Reilly repeats at state EUGENE -- Union's Katriel O'Reilly won her second straight state title in the 1,500 meters Friday at the 2A meet in Eugene.

O'Reilly finished with a time of 4:53.86, beating Portland Christian's Hannah Jossi, who finished with a time of 4:55.77.

Union's McKenzie Evans was third (4:57.96).

O'Reilly had lost to Evans in the 3,000 meters on Thursday, so Friday was a little redemption for the junior.

"I was looking for it," O'Reilly said. "It feels good." O'Reilly said the 1,500-meter isn't necessarily her better race of the two, but she made it look like it on Friday.

"I don't know. I like both races," she said. "I just showed up a little bit better for my 1,500, and I had excellent girls to run with." Stangel wins shot Enterprise senior Marta Stangel closed out her high school track career by capturing the state title in the shot put.

Stangel's throw of 35 feet, 2-3/4-inches was good enough to beat Makayla Christopher of Weston-McEwen (33-02-3/4).

"I just kept a level head and just didn't let other people get in my head," Stangel said. "It feels really good." Stangel wasn't the only Outlaw to capture state gold.

Elsa Steen outran the competition in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 16.33 seconds to win the state title.

"I never thought I could do it. That's for sure," Steen said. "This is my first year running hurdles, so I wanted to show everyone what I got." Steen was also taken in by the atmosphere that Hayward Field provided.

"The venue is just the craziest thing in the world," she said.

"My dad played soccer (for Oregon) and my uncle ran track here, so it's just awesome to be here carrying on my family's legacy." Union finished seventh in the team standings with 43 points, while Enterprise took 10th place with 28 points.

Elgin was 15th with 12 points.

Portland Christian won the team title with 86 points.
