'Don't throw away used computers'

May 24, 2013 (Gulf Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- AN entrepreneur has urged people not to throw away their used computers and laptops and hand them over to be recycled.

Bahrain Computer Repair Centre marketing manager Sai Krishnan says the majority of such devices, which people tend to discard or stash away in their cupboards, could actually be renovated.

He has taken the initiative to collect them and repair them for users as well as offer to repair those which users say are useless.

"Most, if not all, of the parts from any laptop or desktop can be re-used," he told the GDN.

"It is a pity people throw these gadgets or they gather dust at their homes.

"Motherboards, circuits, pieces of wires, plastics, metals, switches and the like can be harvested out of dead machines and put in other machines. With some ingenuity, the defective parts can be repaired." Mr Krishnan said laptops and computers contain all kinds of toxics and other harmful materials and throwing them away was harmful to the environment.

His company recently launched a 'reverse logistics' repair centre, which aims to make use of goods that would otherwise have been thrown away.

"We have already received a good response and several inquiries have come in," said Mr Krishnan.

"We have managed to repair most laptops that had been given up for dead by other service centres.

Mr Krishnan said it was easier to replace old laptops or computers with a new one rather than try to repair it.

"The tragedy is that most of us are falling into that trap and harming the environment." For more details or to hand over unwanted electronics call 33446424.
