Sharp to apply power-saving LCDs to all smartphones in FY 2014(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) TOKYO, May 23 -- (Kyodo) _ Sharp Corp. said Thursday it is planning to apply its advanced power-saving "Igzo" liquid crystal display screens to all its smartphones and tablet computers to be launched in Japan in fiscal 2014, aiming to win back the top market share in two years. The struggling Japanese electronics maker is looking to shore up its money-losing LCD business by expanding sales of the Igzo. The company posted a record group net loss of 545.35 billion yen in the just-ended business year to March. Around 40 percent of Sharp's smartphones and tablet computers shipped in the second half of fiscal 2012 through March had the Igzo screen. Sharp, which retained the top spot in the domestic market share for mobile phones from fiscal 2005 to fiscal 2010, dropped to third in the last fiscal year with a share of 14.0 percent. Apple Inc. came first at 25.5 percent on robust sales of its iPhones, followed by Fujitsu Ltd. at 14.4 percent, according to the MM Research Institute. (c) 2013 Kyodo News International, Inc. |
