Grandview leads all-district softball selections

May 22, 2013 (Cleburne Times-Review - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- JOHNSON COUNTY -- The Grandview Lady Zebras, who won their fourth consecutive district title this season, dominated the all-district selections for District 10-2A.

Grandview recorded its 44th consecutive win in league play before falling to Pilot Point in the Class 2A regional quarterfinals.

The Lady Zebras led the district with 11 total all-district selections.

Grandview senior Kalani Basham received the district's most valuable player award for the fourth year in a row.

"I could not be more blessed by the fact I was able to represent my district in such a way," Basham said. "It's been a wonderful four years and I'm so blessed to have played on such a team with the chemistry that we had. Playing with the girls I've played with the past four years has made me the player I am, allowing me to receive such an honor. It's the players behind me that made me look so wonderful and I'll always be thankful for the achievements I, along with the team, has made throughout our high school careers." On the mound, Basham had a 19-6 record with a 2.05 earned run average with 157 strikeouts and 20 walks. At the plate, she had a .393 batting average with 26 RBIs and two home runs.

Grandview sophomore Kourtney Cummings shared the catcher of the year award with Maypearl's Erica Berman, sophomore Lexi Meadows received the newcomer of the year honor and Coach Tim Jackson was voted the coach of the year, joining Basham for superlative selections.

Cummings had a .406 batting average with 22 RBIs. Meadows had a .329 average with 21 RBIs.

"I thought we were represented pretty good," Jackson said. "I think it's a result of the hard work the kids have put into it and the relationships that the coaching staff has built with these kids to where they will give each other everything they have." Earning all-district first-team recognition from Grandview were senior Brittney Tschoepe, senior Courtney Chambers and sophomore Kasi Cummings. Tschoepe had a .439 batting average with a team-high 36 RBIs and Kasi Cummings had a .429 average with 25 RBIs.

Junior Lauren Starr and senior Alexis Wheeler received second-team honors while senior Paige Pollock and sophomore Shelby Estep earned honorable mention.

Godley, which came in third place and lost to Ponder in the bidistrict round, also received recognition in the superlative selections as Lady Cat freshman Linsey Tomlinson received the offensive player of the year.

"I had heard about Linsey Tomlinson and her abilities before the season started and everything I heard was true and then some," Godley Coach Brynn Kamenicky said. "She was our team's MVP and the district's offensive player of the year. She had 34 stolen bases on the year and was only caught once. I knew that if she got on base, she was scoring. I've never had that much confidence in an athlete on the bases before.

"I am so proud of this team and what they accomplished this season. We had a very young team with eight freshmen (five starters), three sophomores, three juniors and one senior. Most of them had to grow up quickly in order to meet the varsity expectations we had set for them. Although we fell just short in our playoff game, they put up a phenomenal fight. It was the best playoff game I've been a part of since I've been coaching. I have high expectations for the future which I know this group will strive to meet." Tomlinson had a .515 batting average, with a .610 on-base percentage and an .879 slugging percentage and 13 RBIs.

Godley sophomore short stop Jaci Smith and freshman pitcher Cheyenne Barber earned first-team honors.

"Cheyenne Barber was a great surprise the day I found out she could pitch," Kamenicky said. "I could not be more proud of the fight she gave us this year. She wanted to be our starting pitcher and wasn't going to let anything stop her. She fought through significant shoulder pain most of the year and did an outstanding job for us.

"Jaci Smith had another great year at shortstop earning our team's recognition of defensive MVP. She has great athleticism and has one of the strongest arms I've ever seen. She made several plays this year that no one else could have made. Jaci's performance at the plate this year was just as impressive to watch. I can't wait to see how these girls lead us in the upcoming seasons." Barber had a .357 earned run average with 33 strikeouts and 10 walks. Smith had a .333 batting average with six RBIs.

Godley junior Kasey Richardson and freshman Jordyn Logan received second-team recognition.

Rio Vista sophomore Keleigh Salazar made the first team while fellow Lady Eagle sophomore, Jessica de los Santos, received second-team honors.

Maypearl sophomore Linzie Lewis received the defensive player of the year, Tolar sophomore Staci Ashley received the pitcher of the year and Whitney sophomore Bethany Williams received the utility player of the year.
