City Council awards Safe Routes contract

May 21, 2013 (Corning Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Corning City Council awarded the Safe Routes to School, Cycle 10 Project contract to Thomas H. Williams Construction of Corning.

The company's winning bid was $213,293. It was the lowest of seven received.

Most of the funding for the project, $169,100, comes from the California Department of Transportation grant with a city match of $18,900. The remainder of the funding, $25,293, will be paid from the city's street budget for improvements to Marguerite Avenue near Fig Lane.

The city was informed it had received the grant in December.

"We applied for this grant in March but were told we ranked just below the funding line," said City Manager John Brewer. "We were told if additional funds became available, we could possibly get funded. Those funds became available so we received our grant." Included in the project is a sidewalk from Marguerite Avenue east to the end of Fig Lane.

"This project will help the entire area around the school and Clark Park," said Mayor Gary Strack.

Also in the area of Centennial High School are the Early Head Start Pre-school and Adult Education buildings. Across the street from the school on Fig Lane sits Clark Park and the Corning Junior Rodeo grounds.

This is the third Safe Routes to Schools grant Corning has received. The previous ones improved the safety in the vicinity of Corning High School and the access routes to Olive View Elementary and Maywood Middle schools.

The project is expected to start and be completed this summer.
