Golden pipes for the golden age: Singing group showcases youth, vigor of Pinellas County seniors


May 20, 2013 (PRNewsChannel.com via COMTEX) -- 'Springtime Sing & Swing' raises money for local student scholarships while offering community members the chance to 'feel young again' PR NewsChannel LARGO, Fla.

An exciting new fundraiser is on the horizon when the Royal Palms Players present the 2nd annual "Springtime Sing Swing" on May 31, 2013.

Put on by the singing group, the Royal Palms Players, the fundraiser highlights the groups' charming vitality and endearing spirit.

"Singing makes me feel young again," said Betty Blakely, a resident Singer in the Royal Palms Players. "It brings you right back to the first time you heard that certain song, and it's burned into your memory." The Royal Palms Players are resident singers from the Royal Palms Active Retirement Living community in Largo, Florida.

Benefitting the Caregivers Support Network, the fundraiser will announce the recipients of this year's collection of student financial aid rewards, while also serving as the jumping off point for next year's fundraising.

The proceeds from the "Springtime Sing Swing" assist in providing scholarships for youth who serve as caregivers for a parent, sibling or elder relative throughout Pinellas County. AIn addition, student volunteers serving the residents on The Palms of Largo campus are also eligible for this award.


Featuring senior citizen singers ranging from their sixties to nineties, the Royal Palms Players show audiences that life doesn't have to slow down when you reach retirement.

"It makes life enjoyable," said Kay Bach, a thirteen year Royal Palms resident and an original Royal Palms Player. "We share great camaraderie and new friendships are made" Furthering the wish for everyone to recapture their youth and vigor, community members also have a chance to perform with the Royal Palms Players.

Tryouts were held on April 26th at the Royal Palms Active Retirement Living community where the most complimentary performers earned a spot with the Royal Palms Players at the "Springtime Sing Swing." When asked about performing with the Royal Palms Players, Dr. Clare McCreary and his wife June both embrace the social benefits of the group.

"We have made many new friends," said McCreary. "That's the best thing." Both Dr. and Mrs. McCreary have performed with the Royal Palms Players since moving to Royal Palms eighteen months ago.

The "Springtime Sing Swing" will be held at the Largo Community Center on 400 Alternate Keene Road in Largo, Florida at 6:00 PM.
