HP rises with ElitePad900 in bid to grow corporate clients base [Nation (Kenya)]

(Nation (Kenya) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Hewlett-Packard, the American giant, has made great strides in the manufacture of computers, laptops, notebooks, and other technological gadgets that are now making competitors turn green with envy.

Unfortunately, its efforts in the creation of tablets have been wanting, with the likes of the initial TouchPad (used to run on webOS) coming a technology cropper.

The company has introduced a new tablet running on Windows-8 platform, the ElitePad 900.

This gadget targets business-minded individuals and corporate managers with a simple desire for entertainment while retaining their serious business façade.

The 10.1-inch ElitePad 900 is a longer version of the iPad with a good deal of aluminium and glass chassis.

It comes in four varieties priced differently, the main difference being the Windows software, storage capacity, and bundled accessories.

The gadget at the Smart Company review desk is the HSTNN model whose price is on the higher side for many consumers. It contains 2GB RAM, has a 64GB storage capacity, and is equipped with Intel Atom 1.5GHz chip.

The speed of the processor is strong enough to run the 32-bite Windows 8 comfortably, which oozes through the Gorilla Glass 2 with a display of 1280x800 pixels.

HP has taken its time on the physical appearance of the ElitePad 900 tablet because it is simply impeccable. The casing is made of aluminium and the only plastic on it is at the top rear a black patch that houses cellular and Wi-Fi antennas and NFC (near-field communication) sensor.

There is also an 8-megapixel camera that is well camouflaged by the black patch and a LED flash on the aluminium surface.

To the left of the gadget's rear is a volume rocker and a slot for microSD for extendable memory and nano sim-card for 3G connectivity covered with a plastic flap.

The sim card flap is a hustle to yank and you need a pin or a sharp object to force it open.

The top width has a power button, an auto-rotate toggle button, and an earphone jack. At the bottom of the tablet are a proprietary connector for charging and two speakers.

Apart from the Windows 8 features, ElitePad900 contains HP apps, including the like security manager, credential manager, password manager, device access manager with just-in-time authentication, and drive encryption.

As a core tool for businessmen to communicate, the tablet is fitted with a front camera that can be used for high-end video conferencing. This is well supported with the two speakers.HP's ElitePad also comes with a separate docking station and expansion jacket that have additional ports for USB, SD/MMC card reader, and HDMI.

The jacket is a hard and heavy black case that is used to envelope the tablet. It has a pair of USB ports, a HDMI port, a card-reader, and proprietary port that allows users to transfer and store files or charge the tablet.

The ElitePad can be transformed into a desktop PC with its docking station accessory. The bulky station weighs almost a kilogramme and also has all the ports the expansion jacket has. Additionally, it has an ethernet port and a dock for power supply.

The jacket and the docking station will set you back Sh7,000 and Sh12,000 respectively.

I have to commend its battery life, which, uncharacteristically absent from other tablets, was desirable. I watched movies, browsed, played games, and downloaded continually for over 12 hours with the battery charge still intact.

But I still wished for the opportunity to listen to my YouTube channel uninterrupted while putting down some notes in Microsoft Word.
