Three minutes of terror: Armed robbery of Southeast Portland marijuana dispensary captured on video

May 17, 2013 (The Oregonian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Video surveillance cameras captured an armed robbery of a marijuana dispensary in Southeast Portland Thursday. Although the robbery lasted 3 minutes, 16 seconds, it must have seemed an eternity to the two people working there.

Police were called to the ReLeaf MM dispensary in the 1000 block of Southeast 122nd Avenue at around 11:30 a.m., about 40 minutes after the robbery.

Video of the event (which a timestamp shows began at 10:49 a.m.) shows the suspect enter and then immediately pull and gun and point it a man working there. The man gets face down on the floor and the woman employee quickly does the same.

The suspect, described as a man 25 to 30 years old, weighed approximately 190 pounds and stood 6 feet, 2 inches tall. He had a deep voice and was wearing a black hoodie, black ski mask, gray sweatpants and gloves. He may have been driving a 2005 to 2010 model year dark blue Ford Explorer.

Sgt. Pete Simpson, a spokesman for the Portland Police Bureau, said the suspect took the employees wallets, keys, cash and cellular phones, and then forced them into a back room.

While holding a gun to the back of the woman employees head, he ordered the man to stuff numerous clear plastic containers of marijuana into a large, green duffel bag. The video shows the man leaving the store, duffel in hand.

"This was a violent, Hollywood-movie type of robbery," Simpson said. He said the two victims told detectives that it took them awhile to find a phone because the suspect took theirs.

"It's common in these situations for employees to call the boss first before calling us," Simpson said.

Anyone with information about this robbery is asked to contact Det. Bill Winters of the Portland Police Bureau at 503-823-0466.
