Get lost in space Saturday at Virginia Air & Space Center's first Sci-Fi FestMay 17, 2013 (Daily Press (Newport News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The arrival of a new "Star Trek" movie provided a launch pad for a new event at the Virginia Air & Space Center in Hampton. Sci-Fi Fest is a one-day gathering of the intergalactic clans that seeks to spotlight both cutting-edge science and way-out science fiction. For organizers, the new film "Star Trek Into Darkness" got the celestial wheels turning and the dilithium crystals glowing. "We're trying to show the science-fiction side of science," said Megan Steele, director of marketing and public relations for the center. "So there's going to be some cool stuff going on." Not exclusively a "Star Trek" celebration, the event will include serious science exhibits as well as participation from fan clubs, games and even a visit from cult film favorite Dr. Madblood. Relax and unwind at the Klingon Kasino. Fly a UFO drone through the museum, learn about NASA's future of space exploration with the Orion spacecraft. Other features will include a costume contest, a performance from the sci-fi comedy troupe Luna-C and demonstrations from the Menchville High School FIRST Robotics Team. On Saturday, anyone interested in the facts or the fantasy of space travel will want to set a course for downtown Hampton, warp factor 7.
