Woman accused of faking cancer appears in court

May 17, 2013 (Dayton Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A woman accused of faking cancer to get charity money appeared in court today for an arraignment.

Michelle Mundy, 38, voluntarily turned herself in to Springfield police Thursday afternoon and she was arrested on suspicion of theft, according to Springfield Chief Stephen Moody.

Mundy appeared with her attorney, and the judge released her on her own recognizance.

Mundy received cash from fundraisers held to benefit cancer patients at her employer, the Ohio Masonic Home, and other venues, according to police records.

Mundy admitted to her employer that she lied about suffering from stage 4 lymphoma because she needed the money.

The Masonic Home filed a complaint stating that Mundy has claimed she had the disease since January.

The Masonic Home said Mundy, 38, resigned Friday after 13 years, most recently working as a resident assessment coordinator, said Charles Dyer, corporate director of communications for the Ohio Masonic Home.

Several area fundraising events were held for Mundy.

An article posted online by Buckeye Music Magazine about a fundraiser held March 9 called "United We Jam Against Cancer" says 11 tumors were found in Mundy's "soft tissue, bones, organs, abs and some attached to the bones of the ribs." It says Mundy's medication expenses were about $1,500 a month and that she had received an administration of four chemo-related drugs every 14 days from September to October.

According to a flier for one fundraising event, Mundy was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in September 2012, eight years after her first battle with cancer. The flier states Mundy would endure six rounds of chemotherapy until December and radiation treatment might follow.

"Her friends and family are putting this benefit together because even though they cannot ease the pain of the fight, they can ease the strain on her budget," the flier, posted to a Facebook event for the Nov. 10 fundraiser, reads.

Employees at Bogey's Bar & Grill on Springfield Xenia Road confirmed the couple hosted at least two fundraisers at their venue. They indicated they were not regulars.

Mundy is listed as a "team hero" on the website of the Central Ohio Chapter of Team in Training, a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society athletic organization that raises money for the society.

It's unclear how much money in total had been raised for Mundy, but a Team in Training page says that the November fundraiser raised more than $5,000 for her medical expenses.

In a post written by Mundy for the Team in Training, she wrote that she did five days of chemotherapy five days a week as an outpatient.

"I then got two weeks off, I went to work to try and feel some normalcy in my life," she wrote.
