Alex James makes directing debut with 'A Slice of Life'; Musician, writer and cheesemaker releases short film to celebrate launch of Virgin Media Shorts competition

(ENP Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ENP Newswire - 16 May 2013 Release date- 09052013 - Alex James has taken his first steps into the world of film with the release of 'A Slice of Life' a short directed, scripted, scored by and featuring, Alex himself.

The release of the film celebrates the launch of the Virgin Media Shorts 2013, the UK's biggest short film competition, in association with Nikon.

Provided with a Nikon D5200 camera and the creative theme 'Life is Short', Alex shot the 2 minute and 20 second film last month in Los Angeles, and has also written an exclusive track titled 'Superordinator' for the film's soundtrack.

Commenting on his directing debut for Virgin Media Shorts Alex said: 'I've always been interested in film but had never got around to trying it for myself. Like everything else, it starts with an idea and as music is so much part of my life, it quickly became the focus of the short. I was in LA listening to the track on my headphones. The more I listened to it, the more it chimed with the sunshine and atmosphere of the city. So I decided to make a film about being carefree and happy, with a punchline that brings it all back to earth - the concept being life is short, but music endures. I really enjoyed the whole film-making process, it was very accessible and a lot of fun.' The film has been released to celebrate the launch of Virgin Media Shorts 2013. Now in its sixth year, the competition is the largest of its kind in the UK and provides undiscovered talent opportunity to have their work shown to millions of people across the UK in cinemas, on TV and online.

This year, the BFI supported competition has BAFTA award-winning director Shane Meadows as head judge, who, alongside a team of established film experts will be working together to pick the best from the best in a competition that is renowned for finding and supporting Britain's best new film making talent. The Grand Prize winner will receive GBP30,000 in funding for their next film project, along with the help and support of the BFI in its production. The public will also get the chance to crown their favourite with this year's Nikon People's Choice award, with the winner receiving GBP5000 of Nikon equipment.
