Historic site to host eventPETERSBURG, May 16, 2013 (The Progress-Index - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Peter Jones Trading Station -- one of the oldest settler sites in the region -- will be the location of a program "Where Commerce Began" on Saturday. The event, sponsored by the History Committee of the Historic Petersburg Foundation, will feature displays of artifacts, historic photographs, recent archeological finds from the site of the Golden Ball Tavern, Pocahontas Island and the Appomattox River. Additionally there will be food available for purchase, a salute to the Armed Forces with a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance led by Lt. Col. Garland Tompkins and a prayer of remembrance and topical remarks by the Rev. Dr. Grady W. Powell, pastor emeritus of Gillfield Baptist Church. In the afternoon there will be a presentation by Upper Mattapponi Chief Kenneth Adams and Chickahominy Assistant Chief Reggie Stewart and a performance by "Turtle Clan Drum." Visitors to the event can also learn about "Unknown No More," a project by the Virginia Historical Society, which is a database of slave names. Paige Newman, an archivist with the Virginia Historical Society, will demonstrate the use of the database based on unpublished historical records which can be useful for family genealogy projects.
