Da Vinci Surgical Robot Injury Website Launched by Parker Waichman LLP to Help Update the Public on Latest Developments

New York, New York, May 15, 2013 (PRWeb.com via COMTEX) -- Parker Waichman LLP has launched a new website dedicated to da Vinci robotic surgery (http://www.davincisurgicalrobotattorney) to help inform the public about the latest news, including any potential problems or issues that could be linked to the device, manufactured by Intuitive Surgical. Parker Waichman LLP's defective medical device lawyers are investigating the varying range of alleged da Vinci surgical robot injuries, which includes burns and/or tears of the intestines, punctured blood vessels or ureters, severe bowel injuries, vaginal cuff dehiscence, excessive bleeding and death.

"We are offering free legal evaluations to anyone who has undergone a da Vinci robotic-assisted surgical procedure and may have questions about a potential injury they may have suffered," said Gary Falkowitz, Managing Attorney at Parker Waichman LLP. "Our new da Vinci surgical robot website will help facilitate the ability of potential victims of the device to contact us to see whether we can help them assert their legal rights." Parker Waichman LLP offers free legal advice to patients who suffered injuries that may have been caused by the robotic system.

Intuitive Surgical sent out a notification on May 8, 2013, to hospitals and other customers regarding "a potential issue" with the da Vinci surgical robot. The alert revealed that some models of the da Vinci monopolar curved scissors have "micro-cracks" in them that can create "a pathway for electrosurgical energy to leak into tissue during use and potentially cause thermal injury." The notification also revealed, in bold type, that the "micro-cracks may not be visible to the user." Intuitive's alert was issued in the face of an ongoing lawsuit against the medical device maker, titled the Estate of Fred E. Taylor v. Intuitive Surgical, 09-2-03136-5, Superior Court, State of Washington, Kitsap County (Port Orchard). It alleges the company failed to properly train surgeon Scott Bildsten, who performed a robotic prostate removal on Mr. Taylor, who died - allegedly as a result of the procedure - four years later, Bloomberg reported on May 8, 2013. The trial is in its fourth week.

Intuitive's da Vinci system is currently the only approved robotic surgical device for use on soft tissue in the United States. According to the May 8 Bloomberg report, Taylor's lawsuit is the first of at least 26 cases against Intuitive over injuries allegedly caused by the robot.

The da Vinci robot is also facing critics from other corners. According to a report in the Missoulian on April 16, 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is looking into a spike in reported problems based on a survey the regulator gave to surgeons using the device earlier this year. The agency conducts these kinds of medical device surveys routinely, according to the Missoulian, but an FDA spokeswoman told the newspaper that the reason for it now has to do with "the increase in number of reports received," about the da Vinci. At least five deaths have been included in reports filed about the da Vinci since early last year, the newspaper reported.

Parker Waichman LLP continues to offer free legal consultations to alleged victims of da Vinci surgical robot injuries.
