Kyocera sells 1 mil. "speakerless" phones in about year(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) TOKYO, May 14 -- (Kyodo) _ Kyocera Corp. has shipped in Japan more than 1 million units of "speakerless" phones since its release in late May last year featuring its Smart Sonic Receiver technology to deliver sound through vibrations on the gadget's screen. The phones make it easier to hear the caller in noisy situations compared with conventional phones and they are popular with senior citizens with hearing problems, the electronics maker said Monday. Unlike most other phones, there is no need for the user to move the ear closer to the speaker. The two smartphones and a regular mobile phone using the technology have been sold in Japan through KDDI Corp.'s "au" mobile phone services. Since March, they have been made available to U.S. consumers through Spring Nextel Corp. (c) 2013 Kyodo News International, Inc. |
