Coutts-US close: Long-term bond yields end sharply higher


(ENP Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ENP Newswire - 13 May 2013 Release date- 12052013 - US markets finished broadly higher, erasing some of Thursday's losses following a much anticipated speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, in which he said the US central bank is currently keeping a close watch on the possible issues that arise from low interest rates.

Bernanke, who was speaking at the annual conference on bank structure and competition in Chicago, said: 'In light of the current low interest-rate environment, we are watching particularly closely for instances of 'reaching for yield' and other forms of excessive risk-taking, which may affect asset prices and their relationships with fundamentals.' He did not name any asset classes which have caused him concern.

Also happening on Friday was the first part of a meeting of the G7, which also includes France, the UK, Germany, Japan, Canada, and Italy, taking place in Britain.


In company news, shares in PC maker Dell edged higher after Carl Icahn and Southeastern Asset Management said in a letter to the company's board that they plan to launch a proxy bid for the group.

Gap also rose after it said yesterday same store sales climbed 7.0% in the first weeks ended May 4th.

Online travel agency Priceline.com was given a boost after delivering strong first quarter earnings.

Heading the other way was Pain Therapeutics, which plunged over 49% after it was revealed fellow drug maker Pfizer is reviewing its participation in the process of developing pain drug Remoxy.

From a sector stand-point the best performers were: Renewable energies (4.71%), Travel&Tourism (3.31%) and Industrial suppliers (2.57%).

In other markets, crude oil futuresdropped 0.44% to 95.97 dollars per barrel in electronic trading on NYMEX, while gold dropped 1.47% to $1,447/ounce.

US 10-year bond yields ended up by 9 basis points at a yield of 1.90%.
