Software-defined networking event focuses on revolutionary research, approaches and technology
Norwalk, CT - May 8, 2013 - TMC today announced an exciting list of conference programming for SDN Precon, to be held August 26, 2013, at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The event will feature a robust educational agenda focusing on the definition of software-defined networking (SDN), use-cases, the players involved in moving SDN forward, and what this all means for networking as we know it.

"The applications-first concept of SDN is disrupting traditional approaches to networking, and could be one of the most revolutionary developments in our industry," said Paula Bernier (News - Alert), executive editor of INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine and chair of SDN Precon. "This year's event features a stimulating lineup of sessions, speakers and content, and attendees will leave with a better understanding of how SDN will help them create more agile and cost-effective networks."
The agenda for SDN Precon will highlight the latest SDN research, deployment strategies, and next-gen technologies in a format that is meant to inform and cultivate discussion. Current sessions include:

  • SDN's Impact on Enterprise Services: Ovum's (News - Alert) Mike Sapien will offer insight based on his recent research about SDN's potential impact on enterprise services.
  • Cisco's (News - Alert) Take on SDN: SDN from the perspective of enterprise and service provider network equipment giant Cisco.
  • Analyzing SDN: Frost & Sullivan's (News - Alert) Ron Gruia will define SDN and discuss what it can do for the enterprise and service provider, and where companies are planting their flags; explain the new OpenDaylight project; touch on SDN exchanges; and assess various SDN strategies for vendors and users.
  • The Intersection of App Layer SDN and SDN: F5's Lori Mac Vittie will examine the challenges that both App Layer SDN and SDN present and how they work together to build a software-defined data center from L2 to L7.
  • Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and SDN: A panel of experts will present and discuss the difference between NFV and SDN, who's doing what with each now, and what it all means to you.
  • Open Networking Foundation (ONF) SDN Update: Mike McBride, principal engineer at Huawei and a representative of the ONF, will provide an update on the ONF, including the latest developments in the group's work on SDN and security, NFV, L47 and optical.
  • SDN Network Programmability & Automation: Nuage's Houman Modarres will explain how SDN can allow for network programmability and automation, enabling network operators to more efficiently operate and monetize their assets.
  • SDN & Network Visualization:  The recent Lippis Report Research Note identifies network visualization as one of the two key applications for SDN. This session will discuss what that means and offer input from some of the leaders in SDN network visualization.
  • A Word from Startup Pica8: Pica8, which raised $6.6 million in funding, offers what it bills as the world's first open, hardware-independent switching system. The company's switches already are in production networks, including with Baidu and Yahoo! Japan. But Pica8's long-term plans are to sell only software. In this presentation, Steve Garrison of Pica8 will explain how, why and what it means to you.
SDN Precon is co-located with ITEXPO Las Vegas 2013, the world's largest and best-attended communications and technology trade show, to be held August 27-29, 2013, at the Mandalay Bay.
