Northern Crossroads Fortifies Advanced Networking Opportunities at the Boston Internet Exchange at Markley Group

BOSTON --(Business Wire)--

Markley Group, one of the most secure and advanced data centers in America, announced today that Northern Crossroads (NoX), a group brought together to facilitate advanced networking among research institutions in New England, has joined the Boston Internet Exchange by Markley. The Boston Internet Exchange (BOSIX) by Markley is New England's ultimate hub for creating and developing IP peering partner relationships.

It is a constant struggle for providers to optimize network traffic - a struggle that has only been made worse with the increased popularity of mobile applications and web video. At BOSIX, data center customers and the company's 75+ domestic and international network provider partners interconnect with one another across a carrier-class switching fabric.

Northern Crossroads, an informal affiliation of approximately two dozen higher learning institutions with a common interest in networking, chose Markley's BOSIX for its use of carrier-class gear from Juniper and its 1 Gbit/s and 10 Gbit/s connection offerings for both IPv4 and IPv6. NoX participants include institutions of higher education and partner organizations that support research, education, and economic development.

Various service points are interconnected around Greater Boston by a vast array of optical fiber. By sharing the cost of a connection to the Internet2 network and establishing a high-performance regional exchange for participants and commodity Internet service providers, virtually unlimited bandwidth can be made available to serve the growing needs of the NoX community. Adding BOSIX as a service point further optimizes network performance, as it is designed to reduce latency and lower costs by eliminating network hops and bypassing intermediary networks.

NoX aims to:

  • Foster advanced networking in support of research and education in New England;
  • Share intellectual capital and material resources to further the development and delivery of advanced network services and applications to its communities;
  • Aggregate services to benefit from economies of scale;
  • Encourage collaboration among participating institutions and their respective academic communities;
  • Consolidate regional representation of its interests to the larger national and international community, and;
  • Collaborate with other organizations pursuing advanced networking.

"We at Markley are thrilled that NoX has decided to join the impressive roster of Boston Internet Exchange participants," said Jeffrey D. Markley, CEO of Markley Group. "This long time customer and reputable network provider has joined other top tier networking providers that have come to realize that our facility is the highest-density network zone in New England and the ideal location for Boston's premier internet exchange."

Northern Crossroads collaborates with advanced network advocates, manufacturers and service providers within the higher education arena to promote advanced networking initiatives.
