Sycamore Networks Solutions, Inc. Expands Packet Capabilities of SN 9000 with Introduction of Network-Wide Ethernet Switching for Metro Network EvolutionMay 01, 2013 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- Sycamore Networks Solutions, Inc. a Marlin Equity Partners portfolio company, today announced the introduction of Layer 2 packet switching capabilities for its SN 9000 Intelligent Multiservice Switching platform. The new Integrated Packet Exchange (IPX) solution extends the packet-optimized service features of the SN 9000 with node- and network-wide Ethernet switching capability, enabling service providers to more efficiently and cost-effectively deliver carrier-class Ethernet services while simultaneously supporting traditional TDM-based revenue traffic. The SN 9000 Intelligent Multiservice Switch consolidates multiple network functions into a compact network element that enables end-to-end service provisioning and optical mesh protection via an industry-leading GMPLS control plane. Building upon the SN 9000's versatile systems architecture, the IPX solution supports node-wide packet switching and is central to the establishment of an efficient and reliable network-wide packet layer. The packet-optimized enhancements allow carrier-class Ethernet services to be efficiently aggregated and switched both locally and network wide. In addition, by enabling the economic aggregation of Ethernet and TDM service traffic on the same platform, the IPX solution eliminates the need for costly overlay aggregation networks. "As demand for Ethernet and IP continues to drive a shift in service traffic across access, backhaul and metro networks, service providers worldwide are looking for cost-effective ways to optimize existing network architectures for the efficient delivery of packet services," said John Scully, president and chief executive officer, Sycamore Networks Solutions, Inc. "The SN 9000 IPX solution gives our customers a powerful tool to simplify network evolution and expand their existing offerings with a broad range of resilient Ethernet services." "The new packet capabilities on Sycamore's SN 9000 multiservice switch underscore Marlin's commitment to continue investing in solutions that enhance the long-term value that Sycamore brings to its global customer base," added Patrick DiPietro, operating partner, Marlin Equity Partners. With the introduction of an integrated packet switching fabric for the SN 9000, the IPX solution can support network-wide port- or flow-based switching and aggregation of Ethernet traffic for enhanced packet-optical transport. The SN 9000 IPX allows switching, grooming, and aggregation of Ethernet flows between multiple multi-rate service modules in the system. In addition, service traffic can be readily bridged between packet and TDM domains, as well as between Ethernet and TDM interfaces. With the IPX, transport efficiency can be greatly increased, with near-infinite granularity of service offerings, while statistical multiplexing allows over-subscription of best-effort traffic. The IPX solution also includes full support for MEF-compliant Ethernet services, including Ethernet Private Line (EPL), Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL), Ethernet LAN (E-LAN) and E-Tree type services. MPLS-Transport Profile (MPLS-TP) implementation of these standards-based service offerings enhances network scalability, simplifies integration with IP/MPLS core networks, and ensures the same level of predictability, reliability, and operations, administration, and maintenance (OAM) capabilities found in traditional transport networks. The SN 9000 IPX solution includes enhancements to SILVX® Network Management that extend multi-layer service management capabilities for SN 9000 networks. These extensions include end-to-end Layer 2 service provisioning across a network-wide Ethernet switching layer and virtualized customer network management. Unique and powerful Layered Services Management functions address the challenges of managing the increasingly diverse and complex mix of circuit and packet services in metro and regional networks. SILVX simplifies the creation and management of IP VPNs, TLS, VPLS, EPL, EVPL, and other advanced data services. About Sycamore Networks Solutions, Inc.
