[April 25, 2013] Telecoms giant hit with Ofcom fine for customer phone calls [Western Morning News (England)] Tweet (Western Morning News (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Telecoms giant TalkTalk has been hit with a Pounds 750,000 fine from Ofcom for making thousands of abandoned or silent sales calls to potential customers in less than two months. The phone, broadband and TV provider made 9,000 of the annoying and distressing calls from two call centres during one of its telemarketing campaigns between February 1 and March 21, 2011. Citizens Advice has called on TalkTalk to compensate those targeted, saying the elderly in particular will have been distressed by the calls. Chief executive Gillian Guy said: It's not enough just to pay a fine to the Treasury. We'd like them also to offer compensation to those people who've been harassed by these calls. The phone, broadband and TV provider has pushed the blame for the rules breach onto two of its marketing suppliers - Teleperformance and McAlpine Marketing - and said these firms would be the ones forking out for the hefty fine.
