[April 24, 2013] Envoy Slams West's Ban on Iranian Satellite Channels [FARS News Agency] Tweet (FARS News Agency Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Addressing the UN Committee on Information in New York, Iran's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Gholam Hossein Dehqani blasted the western states for stopping the broadcast of Iranian channels. He called on the UN, specially the Information Committee, to play their role in support of the freedom of speech. Dehqani described the continued digital gap as an obstacle on the way of the developing states, and said due to the existence of this barrier, the developing countries cannot use the cyber revolution efficiently. "The developing countries suffer from injustice, inequality and monopolization of the atmosphere over the global media," he underlined. In a recent move in January, the government of Spain asked the country's major satellite provider Hispasat to take an Iranian satellite channel off the air in a blatant violation of freedom of speech. The move came a month after the Spanish satellite company - Hispasat - terminated the terrestrial broadcast of Hispan TV. Hispan TV, along with Iran's 24-hour English language news channel Press TV, has already been targeted by Hispasat's fellow European satellite providers Eutelsat and Hotbird. Hispasat is partly owned by Eutelsat, whose French-Israeli CEO is blamed for the recent wave of attacks on Iranian media in Europe. Also, in a flagrant violation of the freedom of speech, European satellite service providers Eutelsat SA and Intelsat ordered media services company Arqiva on October 15 to stop the broadcast of several Iranian satellite channels, including Press TV, al-Alam, Jam-e-Jam 1 and 2, Sahar 1 and 2, Islamic Republic of Iran News Network, Quran TV, and the Arabic-language al-Kawthar TV.
