UNM baseball wins its sixth straight


RENO, Nev., Apr 21, 2013 (Albuquerque Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- New Mexico rode the hot arm of starter Sam Wolff and a 17-hit onslaught to a 7-2 baseball victory on Saturday over host Nevada. It was the sixth straight win for the Lobos (23-16, 13-4) and it clinched their sixth straight series win in Mountain West play.

Thanks to UNLV's victory over San Diego State, the Lobos moved three games ahead of both the Rebels and Aztecs in the MWC standings. The Lobos seek their second consecutive league sweep today at 2 p.m., with junior A.J. Carman on the mound.

Wolff shut out Nevada on four hits and four walks over 6 --innings, his career long. Alex Allbritton went 5-for-5 one day after being named one of 25 members of the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List, which is given to the best shortstop in the nation.


Josh Melendez extended his hitting streak to a career-best 18 games and went 3-for-4 with his second home run in as many days.

Jared Holley became the first Lobo since Max Willett at Stanford May 8, 2009, to record three sacrifice bunts in one game.

NMSU 6, LA. TECH 4: In Ruston, La ., Parker Hipp hit a three-run homer in the second inning, and the Aggies (21-18, 7-7 Western Athletic Conference) held on. Lefty Christopher Bradley (4-3) got the win in relief of Casey Collins.

The teams play a noon doubleheader today. The first game counts in the WAC standings. The second will be a non-conference game with both teams wearing Boston Red Sox hats to honor those affected by the Boston Marathon bombings.

Soccer The New Mexico men won took two spring-season wins on Saturday over visiting Air Force. Junior James Rogers scored two first-half goals in a 2-1 Lobo win in the opener. In the nightcap, UNM won 3-1, scoring three goals in 12 minutes after spotting Air Force a 1-0 lead. Levi Rossi scored twice, and the third came from C.J. Klepac.

The Lobos will play their final spring exhibition Saturday against Creighton on the Denver University campus.

Women's tennis NEVADA 4, UNM 3: In Boise, Idaho, the Lobos dropped two of three doubles matches and split the six singles matches in the loss. UNM (7-13, 1-6 Mountain West) faces Fresno State in Boise today.

At number three singles, senior Kristin Eggleston came through after a 6-3 first set loss to Sophie Stevens. Eggleston dropped only four games in the next two sets to win the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.

Softball Nevada beat UNM 6-4 on Saturday at Lobo Field despite three Lobos -- Naomi Tellez, Cassandra Kalapsa and Kari Gutierrez -- each homering.

UNM (19-28, 3-8 Mountain West) struck out seven times, six times looking. The Wolf Pack (27-19, 6-5) got seven innings from Karlyn Jones (15-8). Lobos freshman Lauren Soles fell to 8-13, allowing eight hits and six earned runs.

Game 3 of the series (Nevada won the first two) is today at 1 p.m. at Lobo field.

NMSU 3, TEXAS STATE 2 (8): In San Marcos, Texas, the Aggies put together four singles to plate the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth, and freshman Makayla McAdams pitched three scoreless innings for the Aggies (32-15, 13-2 WAC) in beating the Bobcats (12-32, 7-8).

Malena Padilla homered and scored two of the three New Mexico State runs. The Aggies play their final home series with games Friday and Saturday against Seattle.
