Tekelec Virtualizes the Diameter Signaling Router for Elastic Scalability, Adds New Voice over LTE Services

RIO DE JANEIRO --(Business Wire)--

LTE (News - Alert) Latin America 2013 - Mobile operators can more efficiently create and manage LTE and 3G mobile data services with the latest version of Tekelec's Diameter Signaling Router (DSR), available this quarter. The newest release introduces virtualization and adds new emergency Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services, scalability and routing functions that reduce signaling network complexity.

"Moving New Diameter Network elements such as the Diameter Signaling Router to the cloud gives operators architectural agility to handle signaling and data traffic surges," said Houck Reed, vice president of product management and marketing, Tekelec (News - Alert). "Virtualization is one of the first steps to creating software-defined ThinkingNetworks, giving operators the flexibility and scalability to deliver a superior customer experience."

The newest Diameter Signaling Router release gives service providers the ability to:

  • Reduce hardware and deployment costs through virtualization. Tekelec has virtualized the DSR's operations, administration and maintenance (OAM) functions, and runs them on rack-mount servers or under-used blades. This reduces the cost and increases efficiency of a DSR deployment. Several customers, including service providers in the Asia-Pacific region and IP Exchange (IPX) providers, are deploying the DSR with these virtualized elements.

Tekelec also has virtualized message processing and IP front end capabilities to offer the DSR on a rack-mount server, greatly reducing costs for smaller-scale deployments. Multiple service providers have already chosen this deployment option to deliver DSR capabilities with reduced cost, power and footprint.
  • Introduce new emergency Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services. Tekelec has created a mechanism to communicate the priority of Diameter signaling messages for emergency VoLTE calls among multiple DSRs in a large network. By repurposing the DSR's message throttling and overload mechanisms in a VoLTE environment, Tekelec allows operators tomaintain end-to-end priority of emergency calls.
  • Increase core routing efficiency. The DSR further streamlines core routing functions through its new IP front end. This element improves scalability of the New Diameter Network by simplifying IP addressing from other network elements and dynamically managing and balancing network connections. These capabilities allow operators to more efficiently roll out new services across their entire customer base.

Tekelec has more than 25 DSR customers, including T-MobileTelstra Global, Syniverse (News - Alert), and multiple Tier 1 operators in North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia.
