NAVTEQ signs agreement to provide onboard navigation to Audi vehicles

Apr 08, 2013 (Datamonitor via COMTEX) -- NAVTEQ, a provider of maps, traffic and location data enabling navigation, location-based services and mobile advertising, has reached a five-year agreement to provide Audi vehicles in Korea with NAVTEQ Map of Korea and a host of map products and location content.

The agreement covers onboard navigation across all Audi vehicles, starting with the new Audi A8 model which was launched in Korea in April followed by the new Audi A6 and Q7 which will be launched later in 2011.

The new Audi A8 seeks to provide drivers with an enhanced navigation experience in a number of ways. The integration of multi-language NAVTEQ Voice enables drivers to receive voice guidance in both Korean and English. In addition, the NAVTEQ map supports TPEG-based (Transport Protocol Expert Group) traffic services which help drivers save both time and fuel by setting traffic congestion regions as a zone of avoidance and hence, provide the appropriate route guidance on their navigation system. Additionally, the new A8 comes with a MMI touch pad which allows for easy and direct alphanumeric input.

Provided in both Korean and English the NAVTEQ map of Korea will enable drivers of the new Audi A8 to check the official name of facilities and landmarks on the map and promptly search their destinations for efficient routing using NAVTEQ's points of interest database. Hence, English speaking foreigners residing in Korea can now navigate with ease, the company said.

The provision of premium visual content from NAVTEQ, such as 3D landmarks, 3D intersections and 3D icons, will also add a cubic effect to the driver's navigation experience, enhancing the legibility and safety of drivers. In addition, having added contents on ferry routes to the map data, route guidance has been expanded to remote regions including the numerous islands of the Korean peninsula, the company added.

"NAVTEQ and Audi have built a strong relationship in North America and Europe and parts of Asia Pacific based on the common goal of bringing the best navigation experience to Audi drivers around the world. The extension of this relationship to include Korea is testimony to NAVTEQ's quality map data and location content which is the benchmark of accuracy for the industry." explained seonil kim, director, sales & business development, NAVTEQ.
