Prep report: Virginia swimmer takes fast times to stateFeb 28, 2013 (Duluth News Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Virginia junior Isaac Erickson takes the fourth-fastest seed time into the 50-yard freestyle at this week's Minnesota high school boys swimming state meet. Erickson's time of 22.01 seconds has him swimming in one of the middle lanes in the final heat of Friday's Class A preliminaries at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. He also qualified in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.14 that puts him within range of reaching Saturday's finals. Diving preliminaries kick off the proceedings today with Grand Rapids junior James Jylha, International Falls sophomore Cody Tatsak and Hibbing freshman Grayden Phillbrick competing. Swimming and diving finals take place Saturday. Others in contention of qualifying for Saturday's finals include Mesabi East junior Evan Kalb in the 100 butterfly, Hibbing senior Dylan Peiffer in the 100 breaststroke, Grand Rapids junior Andy Carlisle in the 100 backstroke (eighth last year) and Grand Rapids' 200 medley relay (sixth last year) and 400 freestyle relay (fifth last season). Wrestling Evans undefeated heading to state tourney Grand Rapids senior Jamison Evans brings a 36-0 record into the Minnesota state wrestling tournament, which is taking place today through Saturday at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Evans placed second last year and had a pair of sixth-place finishes as a sophomore and freshman. He will face Tyler Joles (25-9) of Brooklyn Center-Concordia Academy in a first-round match at 182 pounds when the Class AA individual tourney begins Friday at 9 a.m. Other Northland wrestlers competing at state include 106-pound eighth-graders Cole Jones (31-6) and Morgan Fuenffinger (29-7) from Grand Rapids and Hibbing, respectively. Jones squares off against Paul Fitterer (40-2) of Cannon Falls, while Fuenffinger faces Jake Allar (36-5) of Benilde-St. Margaret's. At 120, Grand Rapids ninth-grader David Brenden (28-10) wrestles Tyler Giza (39-2) of Fergus Falls; Hibbing junior Tone Fuenffinger (33-2) meets Montevideo's Spencer Suflow (29-9) at 126; senior Nick Bruss (31-10) of Nashwauk-Keewatin/Greenway grapples with Coltan Laganiere (35-4) of Kasson-Mantorville at 138; and Hibbing junior Levi Balleck (22-14) is paired with South St. Paul's Mike Mason (23-16). Girls basketball Esko 76, Duluth Marshall 14 Senior guard Marisa Shady had 17 points and seven steals as Esko began play in the Section 7AA tournament on Wednesday night in Esko. Kallyn Knutson (12 points) and Bailey Mudek (10 points) were also in double figures for Esko (24-3), the News Tribune's top-ranked small-school team. The Eskomos played without star Savanna Trapp, a 6-foot-9 senior center. Esko advances to play Eveleth-Gilbert (9-18) at 2:45 p.m. Saturday at Minnesota Duluth. VIRGINIA 65, GREENWAY 45 Morgan Deutsch-Woods had 16 points and the Blue Devils (14-13) used a big first half to beat the visiting Raiders (4-23). Hibbing 60, Cloquet 57 Khyi Deegan connected on a go-ahead field goal with 23 seconds left in overtime and then made two free throws to ice the host Bluejackets' Section 7AAA quarterfinal win Tuesday night. Kayla Swanson scored a game-high 20 points, including a four-point play with 14 seconds left in regulation, to give Hibbing (17-10) a 50-49 lead. The Lumberjacks (14-13) made one of two free throws with 8 seconds to play to send the game to overtime. Hibbing advances to play top-seeded Chisago Lakes Area at Duluth Denfeld High School on Friday. Grand Rapids 56, Hermantown 45 Megan Allen's 19 points sparked the host Thunderhawks to the 7AAA quarterfinal home win Tuesday night. Grand Rapids (20-6) will meet North Branch in Friday's semifinals. Chisholm 46, Bigfork 33 The host Bluestreaks overcame an early 10-1 deficit to pull out the Section 7A first-round win Tuesday night. Ely 60, Nashwauk-Keewatin 44 Erin and Marlee Muhvich combined for 37 points to lead the host Timberwolves to the 7A first-round win Tuesday night. Boys basketball International Falls 69, Mesabi East 41 Ben Humbert scored 18 points and Gunnar Anderson added 15 as the host Broncos (21-4, 9-1) clinched the Iron Range Conference title Tuesday night.
