BRIEF: University Park neighborhood wins grant to increase communication for safety

Feb 27, 2013 (The Oregonian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The University Park Neighborhood Association will be awarded $500 for its Safety through Communication program, the North Portland Neighborhood Services Grant Committee announced Friday. The grant will become official after the city council approves it in April or May.

The neighborhood will spend the money to increase communication about public safety concerns such as vandalism and car prowls. In mid-February, 14 vehicles had their tires slashed in the neighborhood around the University of Portland.

The neighborhood group will spend the $500 to print newsletters, a flier for the Neighborhood Watch program and a special flier in three languages for the National Night Out picnic and movie night. The new fliers will help the neighborhood better promote its National Night Out program in four areas that are experiencing outbreaks of vandalism and other crimes, said Neighborhood Chair Thomas Karwaki.
