IN THE NEWS: WIRELESS SHOW-HP-ANDROID TABLET BARCELONA, Spain (AP) _ Hewlett-Packard is jumping back into the pool -- the tablet pool. HP is making a tablet computer that uses Google's Android operating system. The HP Slate 7 will have a 7-inch screen, making it similar in size to the Amazon Kindle Fire. It will cost $169 when it goes on sale in April in the U.S. Most tablet makers, including Samsung and Amazon, have chosen Android as the best and cheapest operating system for products that can compete against Apple's iPad. HP previously made a tablet based on Palm's WebOS software, but the effort fizzled. The company also makes a more powerful tablet with PC-type components for the corporate market, which runs a PC-style version of Windows 8. HP hasn't produced a tablet using Windows RT, Microsoft's product for iPad-like tablets. IN THE NEWS: FIREFOX PHONES BARCELONA, Spain (AP) _ Firefox is calling. Mozilla, the non-profit foundation behind the popular Firefox Web browser, is getting into phones. But it's not stopping at Web browsers _ it's launching a whole phone operating system. The Firefox OS will land in a crowded environment, alongside Apple's iOS and Google's Android. Mozilla has an ally in phone companies, who are interested in seeing an alternative to Apple and Google. Mozilla says 13 phone companies around the world have committed to supporting Firefox phones, including Sprint Nextel in the U.S. Phones are expected this summer in countries like Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Poland, and Spain. IN THE NEWS: WOMEN AND COMPUTERS HOUGHTON, Mich. (AP) _ Michigan Tech University has been chosen for a program designed to get more women involved in computer-related disciplines. Twenty universities and 14 companies have been selected for the National Center for Women and Information Technology Pacesetters program. It's sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Google and Qualcomm. Admissions Director Allison Carter says Michigan Tech will seek young women alumni willing to share their experiences with prospective students about undergraduate research, co-ops and internships. Program leaders say women hold only 25 per cent of all computing-related jobs in the U.S. and earn just 18 per cent of computing and information sciences degrees granted by the nation's universities.
