BRIEF: School District approves $250K-a-year contract for consultant

Feb 15, 2013 (Las Vegas Sun - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Clark County School Board approved a $250,000 contract for consultant Ken Turner on Thursday.

Turner, the special assistant to Superintendent Dwight Jones, was instrumental in developing the "growth model" of measuring student achievement and a new school rating system.

Last week, School Board members Chris Garvey and Linda Young raised concerns about the length of Turner's contract, which is paid by private foundation grants. Turner's initial one-year contract was renewed once, and came before the board for a third time on Feb. 6.

At the time, Jones vehemently defended Turner, who served as deputy commissioner for three years when Jones was education commissioner in Colorado.

Turner's contract was approved 6-1. Garvey briefly said she now supported Turner's contract renewal. Young was the sole dissenting vote.
