BRIEF: Someone hacks into Union schools' computer systemFeb 15, 2013 (The Charlotte Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Several law enforcement agencies are working to determine who was responsible for hacking into the Union County Public Schools' computer system, and whether employees' personal information might have been lifted. The cyberattack apparently was discovered Thursday. The school system, which has not commented publicly about the incident, sent out an e-mail to employees Thursday, advising them of the attack. In addition, the system shut down its website. That site was still not operating Friday morning. In the e-mail to employees, Superintendent Mary Ellis said the Union County Public Schools had shut down all computer servers when it learned of the attack. In the note, Ellis said, "It is possible confidential employee information, including Social Security numbers, has been compromised." However, school officials said, there is no evidence so far of personal identification having been stolen.
