Wheels of success await city college [DNA : Daily News & Analysis (India)]

(DNA : Daily News & Analysis (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) The all-terrain vehicle designed and made by the students of Saraswati College of Engineering, Kharghar is gearing for BAJA SAEINDIA 2013, a national-level event to be held from February 14 to 17 at Indore. A team of 25 students from the mechanical department of the college has been working on the vehicle since August 2012.

"It is matter of pride that our very first attempt has lead us to the nationals. In August, our virtual design was selected from 278 colleges, which participated from all over the country," said Akshar Chavan, a member from the team.

The design was prepared by the team captain Nikhil Kitawat on simulation software. "The simulation was tested on the computer for endurance. The next step was to procure materials required to build the vehicle. We were looking out for mainframe metal, tyres, engines and a gear box. The college provided us with a independent area to work on the vehicle," said Palash Ghawde, another member of the team.

The overall cost incurred by the students to make the vehicle was around Rs5 lakh. The team members contributed majority of the amount, in which the college also extended its support. It was also sponsored by Mansons International Pvt ltd.

"As per the criteria of the event, the vehicle has been built without any professional help. Our faculty advisor professor SN Teli and professor Chinmay Patil played a crucial role in making the vehicle," said the captain of the team Nikhil Kitawat.

"The vehicle has a simple design and pays special attention to the driver's safety. It is a single-seater and a sturdy vehicle. However, we have installed a system on board in this vehicle, which will intimate the emergency number provided by the driver in case of an accident," said Ghawde.

The vehicle will now be tested for its technical efficiency and endurance level at Indore. It will be also be tested for its ability to tread uneven roads and climb heights. If it qualifies, it will be put on a 4km rigorous track to test its endurance for an extended period of 4 hours.
