Archimedes, Inc.'s IndiGO Tool Serves as Risk Engine for New Mobile App to Help Consumers Improve Heart Health

SAN FRANCISCO --(Business Wire)--

The Million Hearts™ initiative, a national public-private collaboration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, today announced the winner of its Risk Check Challenge to create a mobile app powered by Archimedes Inc.'s clinical-decision support tool, IndiGO. The winning mobile app, developed by Wisconsin's Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation, will help consumers assess their risk of heart attack or stroke and direct them to participating health screening locations in their community. The Million Hearts initiative is designed to leverage clinical and community prevention strategies to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes by 2017.

"The announcement of Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation's Heart Health Mobile app represents a new era of consumer information and access to powerful healthcare data," said David Eddy, M.D., Ph.D. founder of Archimedes and pioneer in the area of evidenced-based medicine. "For years Archimedes has been developing quantitative methods for analyzing healthcare decisions at the individua and population levels. The launch of this new app will provide consumers with convenient access to our IndiGO solution in a format that is easy to use and understand. We are confident this app will help empower individuals to be more engaged in the heart - and overall - health care."

IndiGO is derived from the Archimedes Model, which is a large-scale, clinically realistic, trial-validated, mathematical model of diseases, individuals, populations, and healthcare systems. In the Heart Health Mobile app, IndiGO is used to analyze person-specific information entered by the individual and then calculate their risks of heart attack or stroke. While this is the first time that IndiGO has been adapted to an Application Programming Interface (API) format for use by consumers, IndiGO has been deployed in communities across the country for use by physicians at the point-of-care.

The Heart Health iPhone (News - Alert) app is available to download from the Apple iTunes store. A web-based (HTML5) responsive design version that works on other devices is expected to be released in March 2013, and the app will soon be available in other languages.

About Archimedes, Inc.'s IndiGO

IndiGO (Individualized Guidelines and Outcomes) is a decision support tool that analyzes person-specific health information either provided by the individual or drawn from an electronic health record. It uses equations derived from, and validated against, national datasets and clinical trials. It incorporates clinical evidence related to diseases, behaviors, risk factors, and interventions. The results generated by IndiGO provide a graphical representation of an individual's risk of conditions or diseases, and the effects of interventions that are most effective in reducing those risks. IndiGO can be used at the point-of- care, involving the patient in the decision making process and improving collaboration between patient and provider. IndiGO was developed by healthcare modeling organization Archimedes, Inc. Archimedes' core technology - the Archimedes Model - is a large-scale, clinically realistic, trial-validated, mathematical model of health and healthcare. The Archimedes Model is continually validated by comparing the results of the model to outcomes seen in real multi-national clinical trials and epidemiological studies. Archimedes, a Kaiser Permanente Innovation, is based in San Francisco, California. For more information on the company, visit our website at www.archimedesmodel.com.
