CV's Bombulie named top 10 columnistFeb 13, 2013 (The Citizens' Voice - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Citizens' Voice sports writer Jonathan Bombulie has earned elite status. Bombulie on Tuesday was named one of the top 10 sports columnists in the nation by the Associated Press Sports Editors. Bombulie's work was entered into the columns category for newspapers with a circulation of 30,000 and under. Bombulie, a 1996 Penn State graduate, joined The Citizens' Voice sports staff in 1997. He has covered the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins since their inception in 1999. His package of entries focused on the return of George Curry as head football coach at Berwick High School, Penn State University sanctions and the 40th anniversary of Title IX. "Jonathan is a consummate storyteller in all of his writing. He has an engaging writing style that allows readers to connect with a subject in a real personal way, said Larry Holeva, executive editor of Times Shamrock. "The columns entered into the APSE contest showed his depth as a writer, storyteller and reporter. "He writes with authority and expertise on a wide range of subjects which is really remarkable when you consider that he spends a large chunk of his time immersed in the Penguins beat." In addition to Bombulie's individual achievement, The Citizens' Voice Sunday sports section received honorable mention for four editions that were entered. The Sunday sports section is led by assistant sports editor Jim Reeser and copy editor Nancy Bombulie. "The honorable mention designation for the Sunday sports section is also a nice crowning achievement for the sports staff. The team works extremely hard be a relevant and hyper local each week. Anchors like the Varsity Voice and Penguins Weekly pages provide interesting feature layers that complement other strong event coverage. It's a nice accomplishment to be recognized nationally for the quality of the Sunday section," Holeva added. Entries for the annual APSE awards are being reviewed and judged this week in Florida by selected sports editors from across the country.
