Social media will help make State of the Union interactive

Feb 12, 2013 (Boston Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The White House is open for questions. In what is being billed as the most interactive State of the Union address in history, the Obama administration is promising citizens the opportunity to scrutinize and analyze the annual speech not just tonight, but throughout the week.

White House officials will be taking questions about the speech via Twitter starting tonight and continuing with events through Friday. View the full schedule at WhiteHouse.gov.

To chime in with a question, tweet using the hashtag #WHChat or head to the White House's official Facebook or Google+ page.

A Q&A starts after the speech at 10:30 p.m. at WhiteHouse.gov/SOTU. That URL is also where you can find a live stream of the speech with graphics, charts and stats that the Obama administration has added to make its case. The post-speech event tonight will feature senior advisers on the economy, immigration, education and energy and climate policy.

The GOP will make its case virtually, too. For the first time, House Republicans have launched a new website to respond to the State of the Union in real time. The so-called "second screen" Republican experience is promising live fact-checking, tweets and infographics at GOP.gov/SOTU.

Microsoft's search engine Bing is launching its first-ever interactive version of a watch party, allowing viewers to react to the speech online in real time and then showing that reaction live as it unfolds.

On Thursday, Obama is expected to hold a Google+ hangout to discuss the speech, which is described as a virtual conversation hosted by Google. It's scheduled to be live on Feb. 14 at 4:30 p.m. at WhiteHouse.gov, the White House Google+ page and YouTube.com/whitehouse.
