St. Louis Post-Dispatch Consumer Central column

Feb 05, 2013 (St. Louis Post-Dispatch - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- When Home Eco first opened in south St. Louis in 2005, co-owner Terry Winkelmann said it was pretty hard at that time to find sustainable home building and home goods in St. Louis.

But that landscape has changed dramatically in the years since. Not only do the big box stores like Home Depot and Lowe's carry more green-friendly products, but a lot more of these kinds of things are now readily available on the Internet.

"Seven years ago what we were trying to do was so unusual," she said. "Now thankfully it's much more commonplace." So the eclectic store at 4611 Macklind Avenue which sells everything from cleaning supplies to gift items to flooring is now planning to close. Winkelmann and her partner, Phil Judd, sent out an email to customers this afternoon to give them the news.

Winkelmann said they're not exactly sure what they will do next and are open to various possibilities.

In their email to customers, they wrote: "We are open to other visions for the store, including new management, employee/owners, or some kind of cooperative." A clearance sale will go through the end of the month and perhaps into March depending on how quickly the merchandise is sold.

"So if you want recycled cotton towels or if you want hemp backpacks, you better get them now," she said.
