BRIEF: Grant will allow Mercer students to test local environment

Feb 04, 2013 (The Macon Telegraph - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Mercer University students will soon be putting Macon's environment to the test with the help of a two-year, $50,000 grant.

Assistant Chemistry Professor Jennifer Look recently snagged the grant from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation to study the environment in the neighborhoods around Mercer's campus. The university matched the grant for a total of $100,000, which will be used to purchase instruments and fund student research and community presentations, according to a news release.

"This project is exciting because it will get students out into the community to communicate about what they are learning," Look said in the news release.

By evaluating soil, air and water samples, students will take an in depth look at the local environment, determining its strengths and weaknesses.
