Ex-prison guard violated bail terms, will be detained 5 daysWILKES-BARRE, Feb 02, 2013 (The Times Leader - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A former state correctional officer charged with having a sexual relationship with a male inmate and smuggling contraband into the State Correctional Institution at Dallas was ordered detained Thursday for five days. Luzerne County Judge William Amesbury found Edward J. Davis, 28, of Kingston, violated conditions of his bail when he was in contact with the inmate since his Jan. 11 arrest. During a bail revocation hearing, Amesbury was told Davis accepted two phone calls from the inmate. Davis' attorney, Ferris Webby, said he believed the inmate has attempted to contact Davis 17 times by phone with plans to set up a post office box to exchange mail. Amesbury initially ordered Davis detained at the county correctional facility but changed the location to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center upon a plea by Davis' mother. It was not disclosed during the hearing what treatment Davis will receive at the hospital. Court records filed Friday say Davis was admitted to the VA for in-patient treatment for at least five days. While at the VA, Davis will be prohibited from having a phone; meanwhile, state prison officials plan further restrictions on the inmate's mail and phone privileges. State police at Wyoming allege Davis smuggled cellphones and chargers, heroin, marijuana and pills into the state prison from November 2011 to January 2012. Davis allegedly was caught with a cellphone concealed in his boot when he passed through security at the state prison on Jan. 14, 2012, according to the criminal complaint. Investigators allege they found Davis had an inappropriate relationship with an inmate and sent the inmate more than 100 letters. Most of the letters contained sexual fantasies, the complaint says. The inmate is not named in the criminal complaint. Davis is facing charges in county court of institutional sexual assault and contraband.
