BRIEF: Winterhawks ranked No. 1 among all major junior teams in North America

Jan 30, 2013 (The Oregonian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Was it the three straight shutout wins Whatever it was, the Portland Winterhawks (40-7-1-2) are ranked No. 1 this week in the ranking of WHL, OHL, and QMJHL teams ahead of previous No. 1 Halifax.

The weekly rankings are selected by a panel of NHL scouts.

The WHL is well represented with Portland, Kelowna (No. 4), Edmonton (No. 6) Calgary (No. 9) and Kamloops (honorable mention).

Portland acting coach Travis Green commented on the No. 1 designation a few hours before the Hawks' game with Kamloops at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

"It's definitely nice to be recognized in the rankings across Canada as being No. 1," said Green, "but our mindset from the beginning is take games day by day, game by game and that's not going to change whatsoever as we approach the end of the season." - Paul Buker - - ___ (c)2013 The Oregonian (Portland, Ore.)
