Fort Gordon recognizes service members, civilians with awards

Jan 31, 2013 (The Augusta Chronicle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Augusta Chronicle Jeanne Stewart really enjoys her job as the chaplain's secretary at Fort Gordon.

She has served in that role for 10 years, and her dedication to her job was rewarded Thursday when she was recognized as Civilian of the Year at an awards ceremony in Alexander Hall.

"I call these soldiers my awesome soldiers, because every soldier here is awesome," Stewart said. "Every single one of them." Not only does she serve soldiers through her job, but off the clock she has been a mentor for the Youth Challenge Program and serves on the Christmas House committee, which helps soldiers provide Christmas gifts to their families.

Maj. Gen. LaWarren Patterson recognized six service members and civilians for their service to Fort Gordon at the ceremony.

"Today's awardees came to Fort Gordon from every corner of our nation, from many walks of life," he told the audience. "Each brought personal skills, knowledge and attributes which have empowered the signal center at Fort Gordon to achieve excellence." For Spc. April Ghiroli, who will be promoted to sergeant Friday, the award is confirmation of her hard work.

She received the award for Service Member of the Year for "a high degree of professionalism" that "set the standard for service members to strive to achieve" and "outstanding duty performance," according to the citation signed by Patterson.

She serves as the command driver for Col. Thomas Pugh and Command Sgt. Maj. Angel Ramos.

"Sometimes you work really hard and it never really shows," she said. "This award is a huge accomplishment. I'm really proud and I know I worked really hard and it showed." Sgt. Anthony Rosa was awarded Noncommissioned Officer of the Year, Staff Sgt. Bruce Anderson received Instructor of the Year, Angela Ward received Volunteer of the Year and David G. Edmiston II was awarded Firefighter of the Year.
